How it works
The generator loads a curated set of 5,000 names drawn from a licensed open dataset. Every record has a name, a gender label, a normalised origin, a short meaning and optional theme tags such as light, nature, strength or peace. The origins are grouped into 25 readable categories so the filter stays useful rather than overwhelming.
Use the filters to narrow the list by gender, origin, starting letter, theme and length. The search box uses fuzzy matching, so a near-miss spelling can still find the name you mean. You can also press the shuffle button to see ten random names from the current filter. Results load in small pages so the page stays fast on a phone.
Tap the heart on a name card to add it to your favourites. Favourites are stored in your browser's local storage, not on our servers, and you can copy or download the list as a text file. Clearing your browser data removes them. Use the shortlist to compare names with a partner or keep a few options open.
Meanings are short glosses, not full etymological essays, and they can vary between cultures and languages. Use them as a starting point for conversation. The dataset source and licence are recorded in the project repository, and the tool reads from that same data so the names, origins and meanings never drift apart.
Frequently asked questions
How many names are included?
The first release includes 5,000 names across boy, girl and unisex categories, with 25 origin groups. The dataset is designed to grow, and the build script records exactly how it was produced.
Where does the name data come from?
The core dataset is the MIT-licensed meesles/baby_names dataset on Hugging Face, which aggregates public-domain US Social Security name records with open name references and Wiktionary-derived meanings. The source and licence are documented in the repository.
Are my favourites saved to an account?
No. Favourites live in your browser's local storage and never leave your device. There is no sign-up, no cloud sync and no public list. Clearing your browser data removes them.
What does the popularity tier mean?
It is a rough guide based on the source data's popularity count. Tier 1 names are the most commonly recorded, and tier 4 names are more unusual. It is not a ranking of quality or a prediction for your family.
Can I share my shortlist?
Yes. Use the copy or download buttons above the shortlist to take your saved names with you, or share the tool page address. Your shortlist itself stays in your browser and is never sent to our servers.
Are the meanings definitive?
No. A name can have different meanings in different languages and traditions. The short gloss is a starting point. Check with family, community or a specialist source before making a final choice.
